The word "adire" is derived from the Yoruba language and means "tied and dyed," it refers to indigo-dyed cloth adorned with resist patterns an was made popular in the early twentieth century.

This form originating in Abeokuta, a nineteenth-century hub for cotton production and indigo-dyeing, adire emerged as a unique textile. Skilled female artisans specialized in dyeing yarns, fabrics, and restoring faded garments through tie-dye re-dyeing.

Numerous African cultures boast variations of indigo-dyed fabric, with its origins spanning both before and after this era.
